Air filters for wildfire smoke

Wildfire smoke is made of very fine particles. A higher-rated furnace filter can catch much more of them as air moves through your system.

What to use

The EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter or higher for wildfire smoke, if your system can handle it. At Caliper, that's our Allergy + Smoke grade.

Get the most from it

• Set your thermostat fan to "On" instead of "Auto" on smoky days, so air keeps passing through the filter.
• Keep windows and doors closed while the air outside is bad.
• Check the filter more often during smoke season and change it when it looks gray.

Can my system handle it?

Most modern systems can. If yours is older or struggles with airflow, ask your HVAC technician, or use a thicker 4" filter, which lets more air through.
